The Art of Ta Moko

Moko is the art of the Maori facial tattoos. Originally, they were used to symbolise significant and specific life events. This meant that only extremely important events would allow for additions to be made. These tattoos were only allowed after the individual has reach adolescence, had fasted for a certain amount of time, and they have attended a ceremony with their iwi, which involved music and dancing.
